Dry Needling

Dry Needling in Columbia, MO

What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is the practice of applying thin filament needles into painfully tight areas in the muscle known as "myofascial trigger points".  When inserted they help to relax the tight muscles, reduce pain, and release the areas of trigger point and myofascial adhesions.

What are the Benefits of Dry Needling?

  • Reduced Pain
  • Relax Spasmed or "Tight" Muscles
  • Increase Circulation to Promote Faster Healing

How is Dry Needling different from Acupuncture?

In the practice and application of dry needling, there is no difference; Dry Needling is acupuncture.  The only real difference lies in the theory of its application. When Dry Needling is performed, the sole goal is to address painfully tight areas in muscle called "myofascial trigger points".  When trigger points are treated, only musculoskeletal problems can be addressed.

However, one should keep in mind that many of the classic acupuncture points are the very same point where a trigger point would be located; it just depends on who is describing the process.

Who is Qualified to Perform Dry Needling?

In order to perform Dry Needling in Missouri, a health care provider must be trained and board certified in Acupuncture.  One should be wary of any health care provider who professes to be certified in "Dry Needling" but is not certified in Acupuncture.
